Best commuter and hybrid bikes in Australia

A commuter or hybrid bike needs to be simple, reliable and comfortable, and stop well in the wet. Flat bars give an upright position with good visibility in traffic, and most can carry racks and mudguards.
We compared every non-electric hybrid and commuter bike on BikeFinder priced up to $2,000 and picked the best for different riders. The full list is at the bottom, cheapest first.

How we chose
- Hybrid or commuter category, non-electric, price shown of $2,000 or less.
- Hydraulic disc brakes for the main picks (disc brakes at minimum for the budget pick).
- Tyres of 35 mm or wider for comfort on rough paths.
- Gearing with a lowest gear around 0.9 or lower for hills.
Prices are the ones shown on each bike page: a checked Australian retailer price where we have one, otherwise the RRP. They change often, so confirm with the seller. Some links to retailers are affiliate links; they do not change our picks.
Brakes for wet mornings
Hydraulic disc brakes stop consistently in the rain and need little adjustment. V-brakes are cheaper but lose power when rims are wet.
Tyres and comfort
35 to 45 mm tyres smooth out cracked bike paths and kerbs. Wider tyres are more comfortable; narrower ones are a little faster on smooth roads.
Practical extras
Rack and mudguard mounts, a kickstand mount and a step-through frame (if you carry loads or ride in work clothes) matter more day to day than a few hundred grams of weight.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a hybrid and a commuter bike?
There is a lot of overlap. Hybrids are flat-bar bikes for fitness and paths; commuter bikes tend to add practical extras such as racks, mudguards or step-through frames. Both suit riding to work.
Is a hybrid or a gravel bike better for commuting?
A hybrid gives a more upright position and simpler flat-bar controls; a gravel bike is faster over longer distances and handles dirt paths better. For short urban trips, most people prefer a hybrid.
