Product Safety Australia has set out when the national e-bike safety standard is likely to move. A page updated on 22 October 2026 says the ACCC is "conducting public consultation in late 2026" and that it "may prepare a recommendation for the Minister on the making of a new mandatory safety standard in early 2027." No specific dates are given, and stakeholders will be notified when consultation opens.
How we got here
Consumer Affairs Ministers agreed in early August to ask the ACCC to develop a new e-bike safety standard, and Assistant Minister Andrew Leigh announced the work in August. The Australian Government had earlier announced funding for the ACCC in May 2026 to develop nationally consistent e-micromobility standards. E-bikes come first, with other devices to follow, and EN 15194 is the referenced e-bike standard.
What a standard may cover
The page says a standard may require e-bikes and conversion kits to meet minimum safety requirements, including maximum motor power output, maximum power assisted speeds and anti-tampering provisions. It may also require e-bikes, conversion kits, batteries and chargers to meet appropriate safety standards. The page points to fire risks from high capacity, low quality and unbranded or non-compatible lithium-ion batteries, and the consultation will consider voluntary standards too.
No new obligations yet
The page sets out no obligations before a standard is made. If the Minister does introduce one, it says suppliers "may be required to comply immediately", so retailers could have little lead time once a decision is made.
What it means for buyers
Nothing changes for you today, and the timeline is only an intention. If you are buying a legal pedal assist e-bike now, choose one that is EN 15194 compliant, with a branded battery and charger from a local distributor, because those are the areas the standard is aimed at. On BikeFinder you can compare e-bikes by motor, battery and brand, and we will update this story when consultation opens.
