NSW police seize 22 illegal e-bikes in a Sutherland Shire blitz

NSW Police and Transport for NSW officers ran a six hour operation in Sydney's Sutherland Shire over the weekend, with Yahoo News Australia reporting on 19 October that 47 e-bikes were inspected, 22 were found illegal and seized on the spot, and nine penalty notices were issued. It was the second blitz since the state's new e-bike laws took effect on 21 August.

What the rules say

In NSW a legal pedal assist e-bike has a motor of no more than 250 watts, and the motor must cut out as you pass 25 km/h. Bikes modified to go faster, or that can be ridden on throttle alone past walking pace, risk being treated as unregistered motorcycles. Reported fines for riding an illegal e-bike start at $818, and a rider can also be fined $410 for not wearing a helmet or for using a phone while riding.

Checking before you buy

The practical lesson is to check the bike before you pay. Look for a 250 watt rated motor, assist that cuts out at 25 km/h, and compliance with the European EN 15194 standard. Be wary of listings that mention unlocking speed limits, throttle only riding or very high wattage.

What it means for buyers

Compliant e-bikes from established brands sold in Australia are built to these limits from the factory. Use BikeFinder to compare models and confirm the motor and speed specs before you ride one on NSW paths and roads.
